Two clocks for the same towers

The trip this site recommends sells both versions under one listing, and its title calls the late one the sunset option. The dawn option collects you at 5:30 AM with a Vietnamese coffee, reaches the towers at 6:30 AM and gives you about two hours with the guide before a Champa brunch at 9:00 AM. The afternoon option collects you between 12:30 and 1:00 PM and reaches the site at 2:00 PM.

Both fit inside the sanctuary's day. The gates open at 06:00 and close at 17:00, every day of the year including public holidays, according to the site's own management board.1 So the dawn group walks in shortly after opening, while the afternoon group leaves the towers around 4:00 PM, an hour before closing.

What differs is everything around the visit: the air temperature, the light on the brick, the number of people on the paths, what you eat, whether you see a Cham performance and whether the day ends on the water. The rest of this guide takes those one at a time, so you can pick the clock that suits the way you travel.

Why the early start wins on light and heat

The case for dawn is simple. The national tourism authority recommends sunrise tours to My Son for atmospheric, golden photographs, and it advises avoiding the harsh midday sun in the area, noting that mornings are quiet.23 Early light runs low across the carved brick and makes the reliefs stand out, which is exactly what you came to see.

Heat is the other argument. Averaged over 1991 to 2020, Da Nang's daily high reaches 33.4 °C in May and 34.9 °C in June, against 25.2 °C in January.4 The dawn group walks the paths before the day builds up, and is back in Hoi An between 10:30 and 11:00 AM, in time to rest through the hottest hours.

A My Son Sanctuary sunrise tour also feels calmer: the operators themselves sell the early start as the way to avoid the crowds and the heat. The cost is the alarm: the operator asks for punctuality, sets precise pickup times and needs a working WhatsApp number at pickup. If a 5:30 AM start would ruin your day, take the afternoon instead.

What the afternoon gives you instead

The afternoon is the easier day to say yes to. You sleep in, eat lunch in Hoi An and are collected after midday. At the site the afternoon option includes a Cham performance, which the dawn option does not list. The board's performance hall runs shows at 14:00 and 16:00, and a second performance is held at the Group G towers at 14:45.56

Then comes the river. Around 4:00 PM the group drives to a boat dock for a cruise on the Thu Bon River on the boat option, or takes the bus straight back on the option without a boat, with banh mi either way, and the day ends at about 5:30 PM. That is the part people mean when they talk about a My Son Sanctuary sunset tour.

The trade-off is heat and company. The afternoon walk falls in the warmest part of the day, and the operators who run both versions point to the early one, not this one, for avoiding the crowds. Bring water and a hat, accept that the light on the towers will be harder, and save the camera for the river, where the low sun works in your favor.

Will you actually see the sun set?

Be honest with yourself about the word sunset. The listing ends the day at about 5:30 PM in Hoi An, and its boat leg starts around 4:00 PM, so you are on the water in the late afternoon rather than necessarily at the moment the sun goes down. Another late tour lists the Thu Bon at sunset for 40 minutes, and a third warns plainly that the vibrancy of the sunset is a product of the weather.

The season matters too. By our reckoning the sun is up for 11.2 hrs at mid-December against 13.1 hrs in mid-June, so dusk comes noticeably earlier in winter.4 One boat operator warns that from November to February evenings come sooner and the boat can be dim and cool.

Rain is the bigger risk. Da Nang averages 21 days with at least 0.1 mm of rain in October, November and December, against 7 in February, March and April.4 On a wet afternoon there may be no sunset at all, while the dawn trip has already finished before the afternoon clouds build.

Food on each version

The food differs as much as the light. The dawn option includes the coffee on the way and a Champa brunch at a local restaurant at 9:00 AM, with a local mochi cake and seasonal fruit, and a vegan version on request. You eat after the visit, so a snack in the van does no harm; another early tour's notes say its breakfast comes no sooner than 9:00 AM and suggest bringing one.

The afternoon option serves banh mi rather than a sit-down meal, and on the boat version it comes with the river. Other late tours vary the menu: one serves a BBQ with fruit and rice liquor on its sunset boat, or banh mi on its other option.

If the meal matters to you, the dawn version is the one with a proper table and a taste of Champa cooking. If you would rather eat dinner in Hoi An's old town afterwards, the afternoon version leaves your evening free, with only a sandwich to tide you over until then.

How the season tips the balance

The right hour also depends on the month you travel. From February to August the national tourism authority describes Hoi An as warm to hot, sunny and clear, and from May to August the town can be hot.78 In those months the dawn trip is the comfortable choice, and the afternoon trip asks you to walk the towers in the strongest heat of the day.

From September to January the same source calls the weather rainy, cool and cloudy, and it notes a lot of rain and even a few small floods from September to November.79 In the wet months the afternoon clouds can spoil both the light and the boat, so an early start gives you the best chance of a dry visit, and an afternoon booking with free cancellation gives you room to move if the forecast turns.

January is the coolest month, with Da Nang's daily high averaging 25.2 °C, and the national tourism authority calls March an excellent time to see the area in bloom.1048 In the mild months the choice is freer, and the afternoon with its show and its river becomes much more attractive. Our month-by-month guide sets out the rain and heat in full.

Which one to book

Book the dawn trip if you care about photographs, struggle in heat, want the paths quiet, or want the rest of the day free for Hoi An. It is the version this site recommends for most visitors, from $16 with 3,411 reviews averaging 4.86.

Book the afternoon if you cannot face a 5:30 AM pickup, want to see a Cham performance as part of the tour, or want to come home on the Thu Bon River rather than by road. Choose the boat option when you book, because the plain afternoon option returns by bus.

Whichever you choose, both sit under one listing that refunds you in full until 24 hours ahead and lets you book now while paying later. Remember the one cost neither version covers: the gate ticket, which the listing asks you to buy in cash on the day.
